Who's Working Whom


René & His Artists

a legendary figure In Los Angeles puppetry, will present “Variety in Minature” for our Festival. René has entertained audiences across the country and around the world.

He enjoys an unequalled reputation for his mastery of puppet-making. Rene is a master showman, and his style is described as both dynamic and elegant. His puppets have appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show, in Rene’s 1970’s TV show, “Domingo,” in McDonald’s commercials and many many more.



Shadows of Bali

Bali & Beyond introduces audiences to the Shadow Play or Wayang Kulit of Bali. Exploring fundamentals of the various characters, traditional stories, and Gamelan music accompaniment, the ensemble translates Balinese ShadowTheater with relevance and humor.

This unique re-telling of "The Bremen Town Musicians" features three recyclable characters - a can, a soda bottle, and a juice box - trying to escape the garbage heap and follow their dream of playing in a rock band. But they must avoid the Dumpster, who wants to cart them off to the city dump! A musical story of friendship with a recyclable message!

Rick Mitchell


Rick Mitchell

presents his critically acclaimed ventriloquism / comedy act with assistance from inanimate and animate objects which he has performed throughout the Western Hemisphere, as well as on TV in the USA. Rick is an award-winning, oft-published and produced playwright.

In addition to 25-plus years of professional performance experience, Rick has an MFA in Playwriting from Brooklyn College, graduate work in Performance Studies at Tisch School of the Arts, NYU, and a PhD in English & Creative Writing from the Univ of Louisiana at Lafayette.



The Mixed Up Chameleon
led by Thomas J. Fountain III

The well-known story by Eric Carle comes to life in this participatory shadow play. Children will create animal shadow puppets out of paper. Once the puppets are completed, the children will move to the shadow stage for rehearsal of the story. A recorded narrative recited by Carlton, the Chameleon provides the audible backdrop as the children perform their puppets with the music from Carnival of the Animals by Camille Saint-Saens.


At the conclusion of the performance the children are free to keep their puppet creations. For Children of all ages (5 and up)

JFKHSJohn F Kennedy HS

The Kennedy Players is a group of high school students who are involved in theatre and stage design. Every year, they produce two full length shows, a haunted house maze, and a float for their homecoming parade. They have been adding puppets to their productions for some time now and have a collection of different styles of giant puppets they have used. This new collection is called Sky.

See their puppet creations on parade to open the Festival at 4:00PM and throughout the day and be sure to visit the students in their booth and find out how they made these creations!

Making Shadow Characters


The Living Aquarium - 12-2 PM

An "aquatic" puppet-making and performance workshop for ages 5 and up. Participants will make one of three types of puppets: rod puppets, hand puppets or marionettes in the forms of crabs, fish or seahorses. All materials are provided.
At the conclusion of the hour, each students will be directed with their puppet creation to create a living picture of an aquarium set to music.

Children 6-12 must be accompanied by an adult.
